Open source is a wonderful thing. There are so many brilliant, hard working people out there just doing what they love and living their life in the open. But for some reason, the world doesn’t seem to be full of open source communities. Perhaps it’s because they don’t have a real community to hang out with, or perhaps they don’t think the idea of creating something that would have wide-spread support would make them feel good.
It may be just me, but I think that the open source community is a bit more like the real open source community. You have a community of people who are doing cool things together and that’s what makes it a community. It’s a community that is willing to discuss ideas, share knowledge, and help each other out.
I know this sounds harsh, but the way the open source community works is that the community is the reason people are all going to do what they want to do when they want to do it. If you dont have a community, you have no reason to do what you want to do.
After you’ve made a bunch of cool stuff, people will say, “Well, I don’t know how to use it, I can’t find it anywhere, I can’t get that cool new feature I built.” But when people don’t have a community, they never get to do what they want to do. The community is the reason people are all going to do what they want to do when they want to do it.
The thing about open source is that you can really only help people if you have the community around you. Community equals participation. If youre not in it, you dont have a reason to help people. It also is a lot harder to get people to be in a community. People usually like to be part of a community, but when you dont have a community around you, you might as well leave the community because you have nothing to contribute.
I like to think of open source as a community that is not afraid to tell people what they want to hear and not afraid to take people’s ideas and run with them.
So if youre not in open source, youre left with no community at all. That is, unless youre playing a video game. But games are really more closed than not, and if youre playing a game that supports open source, you may find that not only is your community less than adequate, your game is also not compatible with it. There are some games out there that support open source and have a lot of support for the community.
To make matters worse, this is a problem not just because of the community, but because most open source games are coded by one person. The only way to make a game work with another game is to find someone else to code it for you. This is one of the reasons why open source games still seem to have a stigma, because if everyone is doing it, it makes no sense for gamers to try and keep up with everyone else.
I’ve written about this problem before, but it’s important to note that open source game developers are often not the only ones that have trouble with this. As much as I support the idea of open source in general, there are just as many people who are against it. For example, I personally don’t love the idea of using code from any other developer besides myself.
I have seen this happen with other open source communities. A while ago, I was working on an open source game called Star Trek: Enemy Unknown. The game was written using an open source tool called Source Forge. The game was in production at the time, and I was the sole developer. I wanted to release the game on Steam, in an effort to prove that this was possible.
