I’ve been doing this work for a while on behalf of a baby who was born in April. It’s been a fascinating and rewarding process to do this in a way that’s respectful of the unique needs of a new-born or toddler. We do these casts in partnership with a hospital to show our clients that they’re not alone or alone in their needs.
To be clear, the casting process is about everyone being able to feel comfortable. It’s about how you can feel like you can tell the story that you want to. If you feel uncomfortable or uncomfortable in the first few minutes, you feel like you need to stop and think about why that might have happened. I feel like there are a lot of ways we can help to support you in that process, but I wouldnt think of them as casting calls.
We want to make sure that everyone is comfortable and feels like they are in control of their story. So when they get the call, we’re making sure they feel as comfortable as possible.
I don’t think we’re making casting calls and I’m certainly not asking you to make them. We want you to feel heard. We want to encourage you to continue writing your story (which is not to say you need to write a new book. It is to say you have a story that you are building toward). If you are feeling uncomfortable, you can ask us to change the way you start the conversation.
The other option is to just let it go. The problem seems to be that baby casting is something that is done in a vacuum. When it’s done, it’s done. You don’t have any other input.
In my experience, the only ones who use baby casting are young writers who don’t know how to work with the medium. I find the whole process frustrating because it forces you to write something that you know is going to make you look like a baby. It is also incredibly isolating, something many of us have to deal with on a daily basis. Many of my new friends who have been writing for years are so tired of being told what to write.
I think it’s easier to get a hold of someone who is the most accessible to you than someone who’s written hundreds of books. I think it’s also easier to get a hold of someone who you already know is a good writer than someone who you’re just starting out on the writing journey. And just like with being a writer, the more open you are to feedback the more likely you will end up enjoying it.
A new writer has to find out who to talk to, to hear what they have to say, to see that their ideas and their goals match up, to see that their ideas and their goals are not only real but also attainable. That can be tricky. In fact, it can be downright impossible.
If you are a new writer, you probably have a lot of questions about how you should approach your first book or whether you should even start writing at all. A lot of the time, just because you have questions doesn’t mean that you are ready to answer them. The thing that really helped me in the writing process was to be open to feedback. If you are a new writer, the best way to learn anything is to ask someone who you already know is a good writer.
I don’t think that is necessarily true, at least not if you are a new writer. The best way to learn anything is to start doing it. The best way to learn a craft is to practice it, and the best way to practice a craft is to read actual writing. I know that sounds like an obvious thing to say, but it really is.
